Lately I've been thinking about social media a lot, and was reminded of the time one of my favourite bands Sydän, sydän reached out to the fans to help them write a new song.
Sydän, sydän is a Finnish band that has definitely reached a kind of cult status. They're known for their unique sound and experimental nature. They're music changes from being sensitive and quiet to being crazy and loud with ridiculous time signatures.
In 2016, the band made a Facebook status update where they asked fans to give ideas to a new song. Ideas on all aspects welcome: subject of the lyrics, the mood, the key, the tempo etc. They also wanted ideas for a music video.
Ideas were of course varied and contradictory, but the band used their artistic freedom to create a sort of middle-ground from the all the ideas. The band's bass player Tomi Flyckt said in an interview that the idea was to create a coherent song, so lot of ideas had to be pruned. He added that ideas like obscure keys were harder to fulfil than the idea of a butt solo. Yeah, that's right. See it being played here.
The end product is beautiful, and can be watched here:
Though I admire this way of involving the fans in the writing process, I don't think there are many bands that could pull this off as well as Sydän, sydän. Their music is already as experimental as can be, so it's no wonder that the end product fits so well in their catalogue. The whole ordeal is a precious example of when the band knows the fans and the fans know the band.
The sketch of the week is me in the cover of "Au" – one of the most important albums of my teen years.
